‘Letters from Korean History’
Bang Jeonghwan and Children’s Day

“Fly, bird, up into the blue sky… Today is Children’s Day, when the world belongs to us.”

These lyrics are from Korea’s well-known Children’s Day Song. Today, every Korean child looks forward to Children’s Day, a time when the country’s youngsters eat all kinds of delicious food, receive the presents they’ve wanted all year, and play all day long without being told to study.

You’ll hear some people saying that children are so spoiled nowadays that there’s no need for a specially designated Children’s Day.

And it’s true that you often now see children with cases of so-called “prince complex” or “princess complex,” when their parents have given them absolutely everything they want.

When Children’s Day was first created, though, things were completely different.

This was an age in which children obeyed adults without question. And many children from poor families were abandoned by their parents, or forced to do hard labor in factories.

Children’s Day was introduced in order to safeguard the most basic rights of children, and to help develop their feelings of patriotism. It was about much more than the day of fun and treats we know today. Let’s take a closer look at the origins of this public holiday.

Bang Jeonghwan was studying abroad at Toyo University in Tokyo. Whenever he met his friends, he would try to persuade them.

“Surely bringing up and educating future generations is the most important thing,” he would say. “We may be under the control of another country, but the future lies in our children’s hands ¡ª don’t you think they should be able to enjoy their country and their culture to the full?”

He and his friends decided to form a group to campaign on behalf of Joseon’s youngsters.

On the suggestion of Bang’s friend, Yun Geugyeong, they called it the Rainbow Society, a name that, in addition to its bright connotations, also called to mind the colorful traditional costumes worn by children on public holidays.

Yun himself went on to become a composer and wrote Bandal (“Half-Moon”) a famous children’s song that includes the lyrics, “A white canoe sailing through the galaxy in the blue sky.”

At the time, however, he was studying not composition but instrumental music.
